Social Work Specialist: Geriatrics

CCAC is no longer accepting students into Social Work Specialist: Geriatrics (683.5). Students enrolled in this program have until end of first summer 2015 to complete the program requirements. To review program requirements for 683.5, see the program’s graduation checksheet.

Effective fall 2013, Social Work Foundation (630.4) the revised Social Work degree program will be offered to students. Social Work: Fundamentals of Social Work Foundation (658) certificate will also be available fall 2013 for students who attend other colleges in the summer, students who want to transfer or individuals in human service related profession with no or little formal social work instruction.

Certificate (683.5)

The Geriatrics program prepares you to work as a caregiver or activities coordinator in nursing homes, personal care homes and other settings with the elderly. CPR and first aid training is required by most employers in addition to these courses. If administration is your goal, personal care home administrators training should be taken in addition to these courses.

Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate will:

  1. Employ social work terminology appropriately.
  2. Identify core values of the social work profession.
  3. Define the major elements of the social work profession.
  4. Examine the main theoretical perspectives of social work.
  5. Assess diversity and its relevance to social work practice.

Upon completion of this program, graduates may seek employment as a recreation supervisor in an assisted living facility, a geriatric aid, a senior living facilities manager or as a geriatric social worker.
