The Frieda G. Shapira Center for Learning
The region’s economic competitiveness in a global, knowledge-based economy depends on the education of all its citizens. The Frieda G. Shapira Center for Learning will improve CCAC’s remedial educational programs, partner with P-12 schools to help assure that all students are prepared for the future, and develop programs and services that assist disenfranchised populations.
CCAC has proven itself in the area of innovative learning programs.
CCAC serves more than 2,000 students with various types of disabilities every year – training many of them to become chefs, computer programmers, and landscapers.

Goals of The Frieda G. Shapira Center for Learning include to:
- Grow exemplary campus-based middle college programs for at-risk high school students. CCAC is working with officials from the Pittsburgh Schools District and the foundation community to locate CCAC’s next middle college at Allegheny Campus on the North Shore.
- Improve learning outcomes and academic success for CCAC students. CCAC will promote learning communities where students of similar backgrounds and interests take courses together. The college will also expand mentoring opportunities, remedial instruction, child development center services, and its women’s center.
- Prepare the region’s school-age youth for post-secondary education and employment. CCAC is exploring the offering of summer enrichment programs, using current students as tutors, and providing more professional development opportunities for P-12 educators.
- Create opportunities for individuals with disabilities. CCAC is prepared to expand services and occupational training programs for individuals with cognitive and physical disabilities, as well as to increase training programs for staff, parents, teachers, and rehabilitation professionals.
