Thank you for your interest in the CCAC Ice Hockey Team. This section will attempt to answer basic questions regarding our team. If you have any other questions, please e-mail Chuck Bell.
The CCAC Ice Hockey Team is affiliated with the American College Hockey Association (ACHA), the National Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA), and College Hockey East (CHE). Since the team’s inception in 2003, we have been highly competitive; winning the CHA Championship in 2005 and 2008. The goal of the program is to compete in the NJCAA National and ACHA National Championship Tournaments.
Our ice hockey program is open to students of any age or sex, provided you are able to compete at the intercollegiate level. Students must be enrolled full time and have a cumulative GPA of a 2.0. New students and first year players must contact the Athletic Office at 412.369.3725. Tryouts are held at the beginning of the season (August/September) and only on a coaching invite thereafter. Invite tryouts are based on the team needs and the player’s experience playing at a high level. All individuals who wish to try out are charged a non-refundable fee for their ice time. All students trying out for the team are REQUIRED to have a physician’s physical (stating they are okay to play ice hockey) prior to the start of practice. Tryout dates are posted on the College hockey team website. After tryouts are completed, the coaching staff selects players to the team and practice squad; players not selected are always encouraged to re-tryout for the team the following season.
Those who are familiar with ice hockey know that a fee is required to participate. A hockey fee is determined one month prior to the first tryout session. All players selected to the team are required to pay the non-refundable fee regardless of the ice time they receive. All team members will be required to sign a team contract prior to the first regular season practice. The fee will cover most, but not all, team costs. Students will be required to participate in fundraising activities to cover some of their costs for travel, unexpected team expenses, and post season play. Players are also required to participate in a community service project during the season.
Our team typically plays a 22-30 game season. Past opponents have included: Georgetown University, West Virginia University, St. Vincent, California University of Pennsylvania, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Case Western, University of Akron and Hilbert College, to name a few. Travel to all away opponents (with the exception of local teams) is by motor coach. All team members traveling are required to dress in a collared shirt, tie, dress slacks and dress shoes.
