North Campus: How to Join the Golf Teams

Thank you for your interest in the CCAC North Campus Men's and Women's Golf Teams. This section will attempt to answer some basic questions regarding our teams. If you have any other questions, please email Chuck Bell.

The CCAC North Men's and Women's Golf Teams are affiliated with the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference (WPCC), Pennsylvania Collegiate Athletic Association (PCAA), and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Our Men's Team has won seven (7) Pennsylvania State Championships (the most in the PCAA history), four (4) NJCAA Region XX championships, and three (3) WPCC Championships. We fielded the first-ever all women’s state team, and have qualified four (4) teams and over 20 individuals to compete for the NJCAA Division II National Championship.  Eight former members have received their PGA card, and two have played on the PGA tour. Our Men's Team has had over 7 individual medalists at the conference, state and regional levels, all under the tutelage of coach Chuck Bell.  The team’s goal each season is to play at the highest level of competition at the conference, state and national championships.

The golf teams are open to students of any age or sex, provided you are able to compete at the intercollegiate level.  The teams play in both the fall and spring semesters. Tryouts are held at the beginning of each semester (August/September and February/March) and only on a coaching invite thereafter. Our eligibility rules are governed by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).  Students must be enrolled full time, (12) credits, or have always been enrolled as a part-time student (less than 12 credits). For more information on the part-time rule, please see the “Frequently Asked Questions” section below.

Tryout dates are posted beginning the month of August (fall) and February (spring) on the North Campus Golf Teams web page. Invite tryouts are based on the team needs and the player’s experience playing at a high level. All individuals who wish to try out must be able to walk 18 holes (only those with verified physical disabilities are permitted the use of a cart) and be able to break 100 using USGA golf rules of play from the championship tees.  After tryouts are completed, the coaching staff selects players to the team and practice squad; individuals who are not selected are always encouraged to try out the following season. A small fee may be required to join the team.

Home matches are played at Pittsburgh North Golf course. Team members are eligible to receive passes from the Student Life Office to practice at North Park Golf Course and Pittsburgh North Golf Course free of charge during the golf season.  Students (excluding those on the practice squad) will receive a team shirt, and golf balls (for match play only). Practice and greens fees will be covered, and students will receive a meal allowance for away matches. Team members are also eligible to purchase major golf manufacturer products at cost. You will be required to participate in fundraising activities to cover some or all of the costs for travel, unexpected team expenses, and post-season play. Players are also required to participate in a community service project during the season.

Our team typically plays a 15-22 match season. Past opponents have included Slippery Rock, Clarion, IUP, Shipbuilders of Newport News, William and Mary, to name a few. Transportation to all away opponents (with the exception of local teams) is provided by the college. All team members have a required dress code.

What do I need to score to be on the team?

Players able to score in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s are eligible to be a part of the team.

When are tryouts held?

Tryouts are held at the beginning of each semester August (fall), February (spring). All tryout dates are posted on the CCAC North Campus Golf team web page. Individual tryouts are held on an invite basis during the course of the season.

Am I able to participate if I do not attend CCAC North?

Students who attend the West Hills Center and Washington Crown Center are eligible to compete on the North Campus Golf Team. Students attending Allegheny, Boyce and South Campuses need to contact their campus athletic director regarding their campus’ team.

Are there any eligibility requirements?

Yes, all players must be enrolled full time, (12) credits, at the start of the season and carry a 2.0 GPA. If you are a transfer student, all transcripts from the previous institutions you attended are required.  Part-time students are eligible if they meet the following requirements:

Student-athletes who have never been full time at any college may become eligible for a season of participation in a sport by meeting the following conditions:

  1. The student-athlete attends the same institution at least one academic year as a part-time student-athlete prior to the year of his/her participation, passing at least twelve credit hours with an overall grade point average of 1.75 or better during that year.
  2. During each term of participation, the student-athlete must carry at least six credit hours in the same institution.
  3. Prior to a second season of participation in any sport, the student-athlete must pass a total of twenty four (24) credit hours with a 2.0 GPA or higher.
  4. If in any term the student-athlete enrolls full time, twelve credits (12), they forfeit the privileges under this provision of the part-time eligibility rule.
  5. Student-athletes who withdraw completely, or to less than six credit (6) hours, become immediately ineligible.
  6. Institutions who apply for this provision of the rules, must submit a transcript to establish the eligibility of the student-athletes.

The only provision which is different for North Campus student-athletes is that all students are required to carry at least a 2.0 GPA. Only in certain circumstances (illness, death in family, other personal reasons) are students allowed to participate with a GPA of 1.75.  If you fall into this category, you need to set up an appointment with the Athletic Director to discuss your situation (412.369.3725).

How is the team selected? Are there cuts?

The coaching staff has the final say and the right to choose the players they feel best suit the needs of the team. Cutting players may be a part of that process. In golf, your score will generally be used for making cuts.  However, the player’s attitude, ability to learn, and integrity will also be a part of the cut process.

Where does the team play?  Who against?

Our team’s home course is Pittsburgh North Golf Course. We play various opponents within the NJCAA and NCAA Division II and III.

Can I volunteer to help the team?
Can I make a donation to the team?

Absolutely on both questions!  Volunteers are always needed for rangering, scoring, fundraising and marketing. Donations to the team are always greatly appreciated and accepted. If you are interested in volunteering or donating to the team, please email Chuck Bell or contact him at 412.369.3725
