MetLife Encore Career-Medical Office Manager Brochure

The Career Transition Center for Dislocated Workers is now offering a new opportunity to unemployed Allegheny County residents age 50 and older through a MetLife Encore Career grant.

To qualify, applicants must present a letter from their employers verifying that the unemployment was due to company layoffs and not employee choice or fault. The grant supports the Medical Office Manager program which provides an opportunity for older professionals to become certified as medical office managers, offering participants a new avenue for continued income in the growing regional healthcare field. The grant will support a maximum of 60 Allegheny County residents at no charge.

The next section will begin January 18, 2010. Program graduates will be prepared for employment as medical office managers in physicians' offices, medical clinincs, medical practices and hospital healthcare facilities. CCAC Career Services staff are available to assist with resume preparation, interviewing techniques and other aspects of the job search.

Program Overview

The Medical Office Manager program is a 75-hour training program offered at the Allegheny campus on the North Shore consisting of three areas of concentration:

Medical Office Management (36 hours)

  • Establish basic organizational skills
  • Understand basic medical terminology
  • understand basic medical coding
  • Understand basic medical procedures, tests, other insurance codes
  • Learn to work and multi-taks in a medical office environment as part of an interdisciplinary team.

Regulations for the Medical Office Manager (36 hours)

  • Understand HIPAA laws and regulations
  • Understand OSHA requirements pertaining to healthcare
  • Learn how to use the Internet for information gathering
  • Learn the basics of managed care
  • Understand fraud and abuse in healthcare

Customer Service (3 hours)

  • Recognize the needs of healthcare clients
  • Identify barriers to providing quality customer service
  • Apply customer service techniques for dealing with angry or upset clients.

Eligibility

Anyone age 50 or older in good standing with the institution can apply. Individuals must:

  • be a resident of Allegheny County;
  • have a letter from their employer verifying that they were laid-off from a full-time position through no fault of their own, but as a result of company layoffs due to the poor economic climate;
  • attend within one (1) year of lay-off;
  • be continually enrolled toward the completion of all three required components of the program; and
  • have some professional experience in an office environment.

Notes

  • Students may only receive the sponsorship in the Medical Office Manager program.
  • The sponsorship covers tuition, fees, books and printed materials for this program.
  • The sponsorship is not retroactive to a current or previous semester or program, and students may not be currently enrolled in any other Dislocated Worker Tuition Waiver program.
  • Any additional training and/or the expiration of the 12-month period become the student's obligation.
  • Students should register with CCAC Career Services on CCAC Career Services Central at www.collegecentral.com/ccac for the following services: posting resumes, searching and applying for positions, having profiles/resumes viewed by potential employers and referred to potential employers by staff. In addition, Career Services professionals are available to assist in all aspects of the job search.
