Overview of the Montgomery GI Bill–Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR)

Basic Eligibility

The MGIB-SR is for individuals who are in the Selected Reserve or National Guard, actively drilling under a 6 year contract. Eligibility remains only as long as the individual remains in the Reserves or Guard, and meets the following requirements:

• Six-year service contract signed after June 30, 1985. In some cases, depending on the type of training, six-year service contract signed after September 30, 1990
• Completion of Initial Active Duty for Training
• Have high school diploma or GED before completion of Initial Active Duty for Training
• Remain in good standing with Reserve unit

 You could also retain eligibility if you were discharged from Selected Reserve service due to a disability, and your eligibility period may be extended if you are ordered to active duty.

Basic Benefits

If eligible, you can receive up to 36 months of benefits. Eligibility typically ends your last day of Selected Reserve. If mobilized, benefit eligibility may be extended for the same number of months of mobilization, plus 4 months. Original eligibility period will remain if you are involuntarily separated, or your unit is deactivated between October 1, 2007 and September 30, 2014.

Benefits may be used for:

• Degree programs
• Certificate or correspondence courses
• Cooperative training
• Independent study
• Apprenticeship or OJT
• Vocational flight training
