PITTSBURGH—Beginning this October, the Community College of Allegheny County will offer its Welding Certificate program in Washington County. Through a partnership with the Mon Valley Career & Technical Center, CCAC students will now be able to take classes for the 18-credit program at MVCTC’s facility located in Charleroi. Initially, CCAC will offer just one class at the center, but plans are underway to expand the number of available courses. Welding 101 is scheduled to start October 15 and will run Tuesday and Thursday evenings for eight weeks. CCAC also offers both the Welding Certificate and the Welding Associate of Science programs at its West Hills Center location.

For individuals interested in learning more about the Welding Certificate program, CCAC will hold an information session at MVCTC from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on September 19. Information on the admissions process and financial aid opportunities will also be available. In addition, representatives from PA CareerLink will also be on hand to offer job placement advice and assistance.

Students who complete CCAC’s Welding Certificate program are eligible to take the American Welding Society (AWS) D1.1 and D1.5 Certification Test. Full-time students in this program are prepared to sit for AWS certification in four months. Students may also work toward an Associate of Science degree in one of several program areas including Welding Technology, Building Maintenance Technology, Building Construction Technology and Manufacturing Technology. The US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, lists more than 125 occupations related to the welding and joining processes, including positions within the region’s growing natural gas industry.

“We are pleased to begin offering CCAC’s popular Welding Certificate program at the Mon Valley Career & Technical Center. With the emergence of the natural gas industry in the state, and especially here in Washington County, there is a real need for qualified welders to fill jobs in this industry as well as in other related job fields,” says Justin A. Tatar, assistant dean, CCAC Washington County Center.
