PITTSBURGH—At an event appropriately titled “Tea with Ms. Elsie Henderson” held at the Community College of Allegheny County Allegheny Campus on March 8 and given in cooperation with the Dr. Edna B. McKenzie Branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, famed cookbook author Elsie Henderson was presented with a scholarship named in her honor. The scholarship, known as the Elsie Henderson Culinary Arts Scholarship, will benefit CCAC students in the college’s Culinary Arts Program. Students in the program helped create and serve the tea sandwiches and other culinary delights to guests at the event.

Now in her 100th year, Henderson worked for the Kaufman family beginning in the late 1940s, including cooking for them and their many guests at the Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece, Fallingwater. A collection of her recipes from her time with the family features in The Fallingwater Cookbook: Elsie Henderson’s Recipes and Memories written in part with the assistance of CCAC alumnus and renowned chef Robert Sendall.

Individuals wishing to make a donation to the Elsie Henderson Culinary Arts Scholarship should contact the CCAC Educational Foundation at 412.237.6514.
