CCAC South Campus Theatre presents “Becoming Memories”
PITTSBURGH—Community College of Allegheny County South Campus Theatre students will perform Becoming Memories, a poignant look at the history of families across the generations, at 7:00 p.m. on April 13, 14, 15 and 16. Matinee performances of Acts I and II will take place at 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., respectively, on Friday, April 15.
A drama with comedic elements, the play creates a rich portrait of small town America as it follows the stories of five immigrant families through three generations in the early 20th century. The play, which was created by Arthur Giron with members of the Illusion Theatre of Minneapolis, won the 1984 Drama-Logue Critics Award for Outstanding Achievement in Theatre.
The student production includes approximately 25 crew members and 11 cast members in multiple roles, with some of them portraying characters as they progress from childhood to adulthood. The entire ensemble is on stage throughout the play, with age variations suggested through movement, voice, light props and costumes.
“It’s a very interesting ensemble piece, and the actors are doing a wonderful job with it,” said Tonya Lynn, director and CCAC adjunct faculty member. “There is a lot of humor, heartache and growth, and I hope it provokes some thought about how our own families have grown and changed throughout the generations.”
South Campus Theatre students originally performed the play 26 years ago under the direction of George Jaber, CCAC Theatre professor and department head. Several members of the first cast will return to view the play on April 15, following an alumni reception outside the theatre at 5:30 p.m. The reception, which is open to all CCAC alumni and friends, will include hors d’oeuvres and an informal meet-and-greet with the current cast and crew, as well as an introduction to the show by Jaber.
Admission to the play and the reception is free, although donations are encouraged to the Kevin Dilworth Memorial Theatre and Dance Scholarship Fund. Non-perishable food items for the South Campus Food Pantry will also be accepted.
