Student Jeanine Bedner.JPGPITTSBURGH-Jeanine Bedner, a first-year student in the Community College of Allegheny County's Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program, has been named a Pennsylvania Physical Therapy Association (PPTA) scholarship recipient. As such, she will attend the Federal Advocacy Forum in Washington, D.C., held March 31 to April 2. Bedner is the only PTA student from among the 17 PTA programs in the commonwealth selected to receive a scholarship.

Bedner holds the position of secretary for the CCAC Student Physical Therapy Association Class of 2020 and is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and of PPTA ConnectPA! As a scholarship recipient, she will receive $1,000 that can be used toward the Federal Advocacy Forum registration, hotel accommodation, travel and food. She was encouraged to apply for the PPTA scholarship by CCAC professors Dr. Norman Johnson and Rebecca Stevens, both of whom are impressed by her enthusiasm and interest in advocacy. A personal trainer and group fitness instructor, Bedner is interested in the increased availability of Telehealth Services for veterans and in educating veterans on how to access these services.

"Jeanine's personal initiative, leadership, community service and professional contributions are exemplary," said Dr. Johnson. "She is a stellar role model for other students to emulate."

The 2019 Federal Advocacy Forum brings together members, speakers and stakeholders to discuss regulatory affairs and federal priorities that impact the physical therapy profession and its patients. Members network with one another and members of Congress, and they have the opportunity to speak with their representatives about issues facing their state and the profession as a whole.

Over the past 30 years, CCAC's PTA Program has graduated 772 students, with an average class size of 28. Other impressive statistics include a 93 percent pass rate on the licensure examination and a 95 percent employment rate.
