PITTSBURGH—The Community College of Allegheny County South Campus will hold a grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting for the newly completed Honors Center on Monday, September 19, at 1:00 p.m. Speakers will include CCAC President Dr. Quintin Bullock, CCAC South Campus President Charlene Newkirk and CCAC Honors Program Director Julia Fennell, as well as current and former CCAC Honors students.

The Honors Center is an interconnected, student-centered space on campus devoted to the CCAC Honors Program, which exists to unite outstanding students and faculty in the pursuit and advancement of academic excellence. The new center houses the CCAC Honors administrative offices, a resource room, an inviting student lounge and study area, and a conference space. In addition, the center houses the college’s first designated Honors classroom, which will be used by Honors students from throughout the college. The purpose of the center is to provide CCAC Honors students from all four campuses with additional learning opportunities, as well as a place to connect with fellow students and Honors faculty members.

“It's been thrilling to see our students’ faces light up when they see our new Honors space,” said Honors Program Director Julia Fennell.

CCAC Honors has seen continuous and substantial growth, with more students taking advantage of the enrichment offered through Honors at the college. Participation has jumped from 28 students in 2005 to 430 in 2016 under the skillful direction of Fennell; Honors Campus Coordinators Srujana Kanjula, Dan Lowe, Scott Mayberry and Patsy Williamson; Dean of Academic Affairs Brenda Trettel; and Honors Program Secretary Renee Shissler. The program has achieved many other goals, including an Honors Study Abroad trip to India in January 2016 with Professor Kanjula’s Honors Comparative Cultures course, Honors Program articulation agreements with five regional colleges, opportunities for students to present Honors undergraduate research projects at the Northeast Regional Honors Council and National Collegiate Honors Council conferences and the CCAC Honors Forum.

The grand opening celebration will be held in the B Building Mezzanine. Attendees will be able to tour the South Campus Honors Center, the main entrance of which is located in Room L462. CCAC South Campus is located at 1750 Clairton Road, West Mifflin, Pa., 15122.

The event is open to the media, including still/video cameras.
