CCAC Physical Therapist Assistant Program Receives Multiple Industry Awards

PITTSBURGH

The Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) Physical Therapist Assistant program (PTA) has been recognized by the national American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and the APTA Pennsylvania Chapter.

CCAC graduate (2022), Alysse Dambrot, was named recipient of the APTA Mary McMillan Scholarship Award. Recognizing students who exhibit superior scholastic ability and potential for future professional contribution, this national award is the highest recognition presented to a student by the organization. Awards are made on a competitive basis. Recipients are selected on the basis of the following criteria: superior scholastic performance, past productivity, evidence of potential contribution to physical therapy, and service to the American Physical Therapy Association.

Dr. Norman Johnson, PT, DPT, DEd, Professor and Program Coordinator, CCAC Physical Therapist Assistant Program, received the 2022 APTA Pennsylvania Carlin-Michels Achievement award for his outstanding contribution to the physical therapy profession in the areas education, research, and service to the community and his profession.

Marigerard Wardrop, PTA, BS, Adjunct Faculty member, CCAC Physical Therapist Assistant Program, was selected as the 2022 APTA Pennsylvania Steven Kolumban PTA awardee. The Kolumban Award acknowledges a physical therapist assistant member of APTA Pennsylvania who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in clinical practice, community service, and personal commitment to physical therapy. Ms. Wardrop is a 2003 CCAC graduate of the college's PTA program.

Second-year CCAC PTA student, Julie Smith, SPTA Vice President was one of two students to be named as an APTA PA Student Leadership Award Recipient. She was selected from 17 Physical Therapist Assistant Programs and 19 Physical Therapy Programs. The award will be presented on Friday, October 14th at the APTA PA MovePA annual conference Opening Reception & Awards Ceremony. Julie is the 9th CCAC student to receive this award since 2012.

In addition, CCAC has been granted a $7500 APTA PA Minority Affairs award for the PTA program. The funding will be used toward recruitment and enrollment of students from under-represented and minority groups in the community.
