CCAC Launches Skilled Trades Academy Scholarship Program Funded by Metallica Scholars Initiative

PITTSBURGH—The Community College of Allegheny County's Workforce Development Division has announced the launch of a Skilled Trades Academy Scholarship Program designed to introduce high school students (ages 14 to 17) to the benefits of skilled trades careers.

Funded through a national grant from the All Within My Hands Foundation's Metallica Scholars Initiative (MSI) and through additional support from the Richard King Mellon Foundation, the FREE program will run from late October through March. Student scholars who meet program requirements will meet in person on Saturdays at CCAC West Hills Center, located in Oakdale, near Pittsburgh International Airport. 

The academy's participants will take five courses that will engage them in practical, hands-on projects and learning activities in welding, solar photovoltaic technology, commercial vehicle operation, electrical technology and HVAC technology. Students who attend all classes will receive a $150 stipend at the end.

There is an application process and financial need is considered as part of the eligibility requirements. Applications will be reviewed through October 9.

CCAC is the first college in Pennsylvania to receive this $75,000 grant from MSI and is one of 18 first-time nationwide recipient colleges this year. There are 60 schools, total, awarded by the program, and this year, there is at least one awardee in each of the 50 states. In addition, the Richard King Mellon Foundation, in recognition of the importance of bringing the MSI national funding initiative to the Pittsburgh region, supported CCAC during the application process and provided a grant for an additional $50,000.
