Are you interested in learning more about the past through the study of artifacts, documents and oral histories? Would you like to know more about the ways material culture - physical objects such as clothing, tools and architecture - can be used to study race, class, gender and ethnic identities? Then HIS 220 - Historical Archaeology is for you!

This course will introduce you to the field of historical archaeology, including the basic techniques, methods and theories used to study the past. Investigating topics from 18th and 19th century North America will provide you with an opportunity to uncover insights that can only be gleaned by analyzing material objects from that time period. In addition, you will learn about the methodology of historical research and the description and analysis of historical materials.

The course is offered this fall in hybrid format (50% lecture and 50% online) on Tuesdays from 10:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. from August 21 through October 16.
